Democracy must be defended everywhere
Democracy is indivisible in Europe and must be defended everywhere. That is why members of the UK Parliament, from four political parties, have signed a motion in solidarity with the President of the Catalan Parliament, Carme Forcadell, criticising her prosecution by Spanish authorities for allowing a debate on an independence referendum in Catalonia. Our motion, supported by SNP, Labour, Welsh and Northern Ireland MPs, calls on the Madrid government to reconsider Ms Forcadell’s prosecution and instead seek a democratic dialogue with Catalan representatives.
We cannot build Europe without democracy. England voted to leave the EU but every single parliamentary constituency in Scotland demanded to retain membership. Some Madrid politicians have hinted they would reject continuing Scottish membership of the EU – though we have been members since 1975, longer than Spain – should Scotland seek independence. But Scottish independence is a vote for a stronger Europe. That is in the interests – economic and political - of everyone who lives in Spain. All we ask is democratic dialogue – with Scotland and Catalonia.
