Democracy is on trial in Spain

Peter Luykx's picture

Municipal councillors, mayors and members of government dragged through the courts or under investigation in a politicised trial. No, this is not an account of contemporary Turkey, but of longtime EU Member State Spain, where advocating independence is taboo. I am abhorred by the attempts of the government in Madrid to infringe on its Catalan colleagues’ freedom of speech. Our party, the New Flemish Alliance, is an advocate of self-determination and the right of each nation to decide the scope of its autonomy.

Either Democracy or Democracy

Oriol Junqueras's picture

There are just two alternatives for Catalonia: either democracy or democracy. While all of the Spanish State's shameful secrets come to light little by little, with a huge scandal played by the Minister of the Interior on center stage, they've started recommending that we invest privately because the social security system is teetering; meanwhile, they're setting the stage to delay retirement age while they rapidly drain the reserve retirement funds. And they're not spending it on hospitals and schools.

Data vs professional liars

Míriam Nogueras's picture

People who lie about Catalonia are a species that unfortunately are in no danger of extinction. On the contrary, it seems like there are more and more of them every day. I will give you some clues about how to recognize them and some data to dismantle their lies. They say you can catch a liar quicker than a limping man. Let's prove it.

Catalonia is one of the leading tourist destinations in Europe. From January to October 2016, it received 16 million foreign tourists, which is 4.2% more than in the same period in 2015, and they spent more than 15.4 billion euros.

‘Proxima b’ and the (small) human component of a career in science

Guillem Anglada-Escudé's picture

The discovery of a planet with some features similar to Earth has surprised many. The human story behind this breakthrough however is less known. For instance, that the team which has made the discovery is as multinational as it is precarious. As opposed to what happens in other professional careers, surviving in the scientific field nowadays is a savage task. A clear example of this is that each researcher who has a ‘position’ usually supervises and produces one new PhD student per year, on average.

Why Europe must raise its voice in support of Carme Forcadell

Seán Crowe's picture

In my work as Sinn Féin’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson I regularly meet with Catalan political parties and Catalan Government officials. Sinn Féin is very clear about Catalan independence- Catalans have a right to self-determination and they should be allowed to decide their future through a democratic referendum.

Despite being familiar with ongoing political issues in Catalonia and the roadmap to independence, and have to admit I was shocked when I heard of the pending prosecution of Ms Carme Forcadell by the Spanish authorities.

Democracy must be defended everywhere

George Kerevan's picture

Democracy is indivisible in Europe and must be defended everywhere. That is why members of the UK Parliament, from four political parties, have signed a motion in solidarity with the President of the Catalan Parliament, Carme Forcadell, criticising her prosecution by Spanish authorities for allowing a debate on an independence referendum in Catalonia. Our motion, supported by SNP, Labour, Welsh and Northern Ireland MPs, calls on the Madrid government to reconsider Ms Forcadell’s prosecution and instead seek a democratic dialogue with Catalan representatives.

For Barcelona, Brexit means collaboration

Jaume Collboni's picture

First of all, I’d like to say that ‘Brexit’ is bad news for us. Our hope would be for the UK to remain within the EU. However, the referendum’s result is beyond appeal and, as democrats, we must respect the British people’s verdict.

For a future that is very near

Montse Daban's picture

Everything is “A punt”, we’re “on our marks” for the 11th of September demonstration, for the “Diada”, Catalonia’s National Day. For a future that is near, very near.

This year’s event will be held simultaneously in 5 cities across Catalonia, as well as in 50 more cities around the world.
