We will vote for democracy

‘Junts Pel Sí’ (‘Together for Yes’) is an unprecedented electoral candidature for an unprecedented moment in Catalan politics. It brings together people with very different ideas but who share a common goal: obtaining the essential tools and mechanisms to ensure a better life for everyone in Catalonia.

Using the traditional political nomenclature, this candidature includes liberals, social-democrats, greens, Christian-democrats, people from various political parties alongside non-partisan independent candidates from the business world, trade unions, social movements, culture and sport. There is a clear reason behind this unity: we believe that only by working together will we be able to achieve the democratic mandate that Europe needs to see.

These elections represent a unique opportunity to overcome all the hurdles the Spanish State has put in place. The Spanish government rejected the holding of a referendum on the future of Catalonia and prohibited other kinds of consultations. The “public participatory process’ which Catalonia eventually held on 9 November 2014 has led to legal action being taken against the Catalan President. Despite this and other threats of the Spanish government, over two million Catalan citizens voted in this process.

It is a gross injustice that 7.5 million citizens have to live in a State which acts against them and which is becoming more and more authoritarian.

The only change possible in Catalonia is to have the instruments to be able to conduct politics, to draw up and implement policy, to guarantee prosperity and to use politics for social justice. For these reasons we want to be a new State in Europe, to take on our international responsibilities and show that we are prepared to help make the world a better place in our calm but serious way. Calmly but firmly, we are a country carrying out the biggest democratic revolution in Europe, with an exemplary civility and a smile. The huge peaceful demonstrations held every year over the last four years show our determination and character.

We propose to exercise our Right to Decide on 27 September and we will do it in favour of a new and better country, creating a modern and efficient European State different from the stiff antiquated State of Spain. We ask the world to understand this, accept the result of the elections and recognize us as a European nation, a nation which has always felt part of Europe and has no intention of renouncing this.

Above all, we will vote to tell the world that we are in favour of democracy and that only with democracy, can freedom be achieved.
