The Eyes of the World Are Upon Us

Roger Albinyana's picture

Several days ago, the Parliament of Uruguay held a session of its International Affairs Commission to discuss the political events currently unfolding in Catalonia. I myself had the honor of leading the Catalan delegation and was able to observe first-hand the positive outcome of that meeting in which the Uruguayan legislators showed their support for the right to self-determination.

Is Catalonia’s bid a fad or a fixture?

Toni Strubell's picture

Just recently I have read about and been in contact with a number of English, American and European observers of the Catalan sovereignty issue who seem confused. They are not sure if they are faced by a momentary fad, fever or frenzy that time will “cure” or by a prospect of severe and lasting change. In some cases I have been able to politely suggest that the comfortable pro-independence majority in the Catalan Parliament might be indicative of quite a solid phenomenon, as are the seven or eight years of massive street marches which, incidentally, are showing no signs of flagging. Be it as it may, I think that some fresh on-the-spot views on the Catalan issue might be welcomed here and there.

Which domain for an independent Catalonia?

Oriol Torres i Tornel's picture

Almost every user remembers the time when the most common internet domain was ‘.com’. As new ones were appearing and becoming increasingly popular, we got used to other ‘top-level domains’ – which is their technical name – such as the ‘.org’ and the ‘.net’. Currently, a great deal of domains exist and many more will be approved, because the situation has radically changed and because a business model has also been developed around this, mainly based – I’m afraid – on privileges and speculation.

The importance of medieval Catalonia to contemporary culture

Karen Stöber's picture

In an edition of the journal Sàpiens, readers were asked to choose the twelve greatest heroes in Catalan history. Interestingly, no fewer than five of the elected were medieval men (and a woman), among whom Jaume I (d.1276) and Ermessenda, countess of Barcelona (d.1058) were judged to be the greatest (and second greatest) of all Catalonia’s heroes, beating men like Francesc Macià and Antoni Gaudí into third and eleventh place respectively. Judging by this result, the medieval past of Catalonia still looms large in the popular conscience of the modern country.

The crown of Aragon and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries

Stefano M. Cingolani's picture

The 13th century is the century of the Europeanization of Europe. It was a time when various monarchies expanded their borders to include those territories inhabited both by non-Christians (Muslims, Cathars and Pagans) and Christians that were not a part of the feudal and Roman Catholic system (such as the Celtic countries or the Byzantine Empire). Military conquests were not the only means of expansion. The Mediterranean was a principal route of commerce, and it was here that the three Italian maritime Republics of Genoa, Venice and Pisa fought for supremacy.

Arrival

Matthew Tree's picture

When I first arrived in a certain Catalan village some sixty kilometres from Barcelona, like most English people all I knew about Catalonia was that the word formed part of the title of a book by George Orwell. Again like most English people, when Catalans started to tell me about their history and language, I jumped to the conclusion that I was being fed so much nationalist flim-flam. What changed my mind - to the extent that I not only learnt Catalan but eventually came to write and publish in this language - was gradual exposure to the reality on the ground.

Catalonia, the imaginative country

David Boronat's picture

The era of knowledge, the effects of globalization or the digital revolution are going to rapidly transform the world we live in. In fact, our lives have already been transformed to some degree, even if a few years from now we will look back and laugh at how we are still using the Internet and new technologies today. No one doubts that this is only the beginning.

Catalonia will find a way

Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida's picture

If we were to consider only objective data, it would take just a moment to realise that Catalonia's current situation is extremely worrying. The ruling of the Constitutional Court, which annuls essential parts of the new Statute of Autonomy, has shown that Catalonia's aspirations of self-government, formulated democratically in accordance with existing legislation, are incompatible with the interpretation of the Spanish Constitution.

A strong Catalonia emerges from the crisis

Antoni Castells's picture

The complexity and intensity of the economic crisis we have faced in the past two years has been unprecedented, but today we can say that the world has left the recession behind. Now, it is time to look forward and also to learn from past experience, from the mistakes that have caused this crisis. In the same way that if we are now leaving the crisis it is because the world has learnt from past experience, especially from the Great Depression, in the thirties of the twentieth century.
